Abstract: Ecological environment has changed significantly in the Tarim river basin in the past 50 years along with resources exploration and socio-economic development, and the contradiction between ecological protection and economic development has increasingly become outstanding. Evaluation indices of eco-economic system were established on the base of systematology and ecological economics theory, and the coupling situation of eco-economic system in Tarim river basin was assessed using quantitative evaluation model in the paper. Research result showed that the composite indices of the eco-environment and socio-economic subsystems increased almost simultaneously in Tarim river basin during 2001—2005. The evolution speed of the eco-environment subsystem presented an upward trend, but it's lower than the evolution speed of socio-economic system which presented a downward trend. The coupling situation of eco-economic system changed gradually from the non-conforming status in 2001—2003 to the coordinating status in 2004—2005.
