Abstract: Land desertification not only occurred in arid and semiarid zones, including parts of subhumid region of northern china, but also appeared on quite a few eastern plains(e.g. Huang-Hui-Hai Plain) in humid and subhumid zones, coastal zones, and mountains of southern China. The implication embraced in the processes of environment degradation, beyond the bounds of "blownsand", includes "gravelization" landscapes similar to gravel desert and deteriorated mountain slopes resulting from water erosion. Owing to its varied contents we use the term desertification in a broad sense as we explore the degradation processes of desert-like conditions taking place in mountainous environments of southern China.
