Abstract: In August, 1995, a China-Japan Joint Research Group organized by the Institute of Desert Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, discovered m any active booming dunes in the Badain Jaran Desert. Details of the dunes and the activities that show loud sounding and self-booming were described by the data. The maintaining activities of the desert means maintaining a clean environment in harmony with the living structure of the desert, which is constructed by coexistence of sand, cam els, and human beings. Because the booming sand of the desert and the singing sand of the beach face the same danger from human destruction of the environment, w e need some means to meet the situation. An unexpected finding which show s a hint to make a clear booming sand formation from beach sand is reported. From such similarities of both types of sand, it w as proposed that it is necessary to cooperate and construct stations on both sides to record data. Because the sand is model of a clean environment, it was stressed that the desert must be preserved forever as a model of a clean environment. Means w ere proposed to meet the situation for sight-seeing tourists.
