Abstract Global climate change and irrational human activities in the past years had resulted in eco-environmental degradation, water shortage, and violent contradiction between man and land in the Shiyanghe River basin. So the basin is now faced with serious ecological crisis. This paper applied RS and GIS as technical means to assess the ecological security in the basin. First, Pressure-State-Response (PSR) model was used to establish the assessment indicator system, and the weights of the indicators were determined by AHP (analytic hierarchy process) method. Then, the assessment of the ecological security in the basin was taken with every county as the assessment unit. Result showed that the status in upstream was better than that in the mid-stream, and the status in mid-stream was better than that in the down stream. The status of most counties in this basin were in degrees of Ⅱor Ⅲ. In the paper, different measures and advices are proposed for all the counties in the basin according to the different ecological security status.
