Abstract  The innovative achievements of basic scientific research and applied basic research are mainly presented as articles published in specialized periodicals. The "Journal of Desert Research", concentrated on desert, desertification and the related issues, has finished its publication for 30 years. This article uses the detailed bibliographic data obtained from database to analyze the articles publication trend of the Journal of Desert Research in these 30 years. Quantitative analyzing has been conducted on articles number, discipline distribution, study area, core authors group, and research hot spots; the annual variations of these indices have illustrated the change trend of research content and research orientation, and the distribution of research institutes and researchers composition. The number of articles published in the "Journal of Desert Research" presented a swift growth tendency, and the tendency was especially obvious since the implementation of Knowledge Innovation Project in Chinese Academy of Science. The related research institutes were mainly concentrated in the northwestern China, and some comprehensive universities joined in the desert research field recently, which indicated the more and more attention was given to desert research. Sandy desertification, sand storm and climate change were the three keywords with the highest retrieval frequency, and sand storm was the keyword with the highest retrieval frequency during 2001—2009, which reflected the research hot spots in "Journal of Desert Research". The bibliometric analysis of literatures citation showed that the citation times of articles published in Journal of Desert Research increased according to CSCD and SCI databases and the influence factor improved continually. However, the core authors group of "Journal of Desert Research" had not really formed because the new researchers joined in continuously and the experienced ones intended to submit their articles to highly-influencing oversea journals so as to enhance their international influence. This presents Journal of Desert Research with new opportunity and challenge in its development.
