Wind Tunnel Experiment of the Effect of Sand Prevention Measures along Gobi Highway |

Abstract Wind erosion and sand sediment are two main problems affecting highways in Gobi area of Western China. This paper investigated the effect of sand prevention measures on highways in Gobi area by simulating different highway segments and sand prevention designs in wind tunnel and surveying fields by Particle Image Velocimetry. The wind tunnel experiment results indicated that unsaturated blown sand flow played a dominant role in the sapping and abrasion of highway cross section and some effective protection measures should be adopted to improve the protection of embankment slope of highway. In addition, the surface of isolation belts should be kept the same height as the driving pavement to form a sediment transportation pathway. The voidage of isolation belts should be more than 30%. For reducing sand deposition near highway, highway slope angle should be kept less than 40°. The flood discharge trench should be removed and some other protection measures should be adopted in some areas with abundant sand source. The experimental results also showed that a series of protection measures including straw checkerboard, gravel cover and sand deposition ditches can effectively reduce sediment concentration of airflow and sand deposition on highways.
