Impact of Snowfall Amount and Snowfall Frequency on Sand-Dust Events in China

Abstract  The statistical results of meteorological data during 1970—2000 show that the sand-dust events frequency is relatively low in areas with snow cover in winter and spring in China, and the sand-dust events mainly occurs in areas with low snow coverage and snowfall amount. There is a significantly negative correlation between annual snowfall amount and sand-dust events frequency. Increase of annual snowfall amount decreases annual sand-dust events frequency obviously. Meanwhile, snowfall frequency is also an important influence factor on sand-dust events frequency. In arid regions of Northwestern China with less snowfall, especially in the northern part of Xinjiang, the frequency of sand-dust events reduces with increasing of snowfall frequency.
