Agricultural Water-saving Approaches in Qinwangchuan Irrigation Area, Gansu, China

Abstract  Water resources are deficient in Qiuwangchuan Irrigation Area of Gansu Province, China. Urbanization construction of Lanzhou new district aggravates water resource deficiency and conflict between supply and demand of water resources. So, agricultural water saving must be enforced in this area. Based on water saving irrigation experiments in Qiwangchuan Irrigation Area and in other areas of northwest China, the authors summarizes five approaches suitable for agricultural water saving in Qiwangchuan Irrigation Area: (1) to develop advanced surface-irrigation-dominated water saving technology; (2) to apply channel lining technique; (3) to combine agricultural water saving and plastic film cultivation technologies; (4) to popularize under-film drip irrigation technology; (5) to propose water saving ideas and construct water-saving society. Integrated implementation of these measures will guarantee the water using pattern transformation from single agricultural irrigation to multiple uses, and further to promote economic sustainable development of Qiwangchuan Irrigation Area.
