Abstract: The soil hahtat types and the distribution of Artemisia intramongolica and A.frigida in relation to the soil conditions in desertified land of Bashang region,Hebei province were studied by cluster and regression analytical methods. The analytical results showed that Artemisia intramongolica becomes more and more important in the plant association on the increasingly accentated desertified localities, namely shady slopes of hills, flat grassland, sunny slopes of hills, gentle semi-shady sandy slopes, fixed sandy land and semifixed sandy land. The distribution of A.frigida is mainly related to grazing intensity rather than soil habitat conditions.Therefore.A.intramongolica can be used as an indicator plant of land desertification, while A.frigida can be used as an indicator pant of grassland degtadation caused by overgrazjng.
