Abstract: The landscape of the Ordos region during the Bei Wei dynasty (AD 385-534) has been studied by analyzing the historical bibliography, in conjunction with examining high-precision geological records. The results show that the Hobq Desert had a vast area with deep sand. There were mobile sand dunes in the Mu Us Desert and the vegetation cover was sparse. The climates were generally dry with evident seasonality. The deserts and semi-deserts co-existed with grasslands. Human activities centered in the areas where the tributaries joined the Yellow River. Herdmen population and livestock load increased southward, and reaching the highest in the southeastern margin.
