Abstract:

The Ningxia-Inner Mongolian Reach of the Yellow River passes through the Tengger Desert, Hedong Desert, Ulan Buh Desert and Kubuqi Desert, forming a unique landform landscape of river surrounded by desert. In the past 50 years, due to the impact of climate and human activities, the relationship between water and sediment in this reach has worsened, the channel has shrunk and accelerated the formation of “hanging river”, which has aroused great attention of the state and the scientific and technological community. In this paper, the effects of aeolian sand on the Ningxia-Inner Mongolian Reach of the Yellow River were discussed from three aspects of sediment siltation, river channel evolution and flood with high sediment content, in order to provide a basis for the prevention and control of "hanging river" and regional ecological protection in this reach.

Key words: aeolian sand, siltation, hyper-concentrated flow, evolution of river channel
