Abstract

Dendrochronology is widely used in the research of global change, particularly in the aspect of climate change, due to its high resolution, precise cross-dating, wide distribution of samples and quantitative analysis. Characterizing by the removal of noise, mainly the growth trend, and the extraction of climate signal, the building of tree-ring width chronology plays a vital role in dendroclimatology studies. Based on the theories of building tree-ring width chronology and a conceptual model for tree-ring radial growth, we reviews the principles and methods of the growth trend estimation, indexing and averaging used in the chronology building. The various methods of growth trend estimation, as the vital step, fall into two categories: the traditional curve fitting based estimation, and regional curve based ones which have been focused and developed recently to overcome the shortcoming of curve fitting ones in preserving the low frequency signal. We propose the direction of low frequency preserve for future research of building the ring width chronology.
