Variation of Groundwater Level in Ordos, Inner Mongolia, China from 2005 to 2014

Ordos is located in the semi-arid area of China, and is scarce of water resource. To monitor the variation of groundwater level is important for ecological and economic development in the region. In this study, variation of groundwater level in the region was analyzed based on data collected by six groundwater level observation stations from 2005 to 2014. The results show that: (1) The average groundwater level decreased from 2005 to 2006, increased from 2007 to 2010, and declined to minimum level in 2011 since the severe drought. It was uplifted gradually from 2012 to 2014 at a rate of 0.14 m every year, and came to the highest value in 2014 among the past 10 years. (2) Seasonal change of groundwater level was obvious in the region. The groundwater level continuously declined from March to July, and the groundwater level was the lowest in July. The groundwater level was gradually raised from August to October. The groundwater level was slightly elevated from November to February in the following year and came to the highest value in February. Seasonal change of groundwater level was closely correlated with rainfall and evaporation.
