Abstract

Leaf traits including phenotypic plasticity and plant functional characteristics can directly or indirectly reflect the adaptation strategy of plants to the environment, reflecting plant growth and ecosystem stability. We measured leaf traits of Ammopiptanthus mongolicus in 14 counties of Inner Mongolia, Ningxia and Gansu Provinces. Thus, the relationship between the leaf traits of A. mongolicus and environmental factors could elucidate the relationship between intraspecific variations and environmental factors. The results showed that (1) The leaf traits of A. mongolicus showed significant intraspecific variations, and the variation coefficient was between 5.28% and 28.82%. The leaf length, leaf width, leaf thickness, leaf area, specific leaf area, leaf dry matter content, leaf nitrogen content, leaf phosphorus content, leaf C:N, leaf C:P and leaf N:P of A. mongolicus in the fourteen plots were significantly different (P<0.05), but the difference in leaf length to width ratio and leaf organic carbon content were not significant (P>0.05). (2) There was a significant correlation between 36 pairs of leaf traits. Leaf total nitrogen content, leaf dry matter content and leaf width all had a high correlation coefficient with many leaf traits. A. mongolicus adapted to the changes in the environment by regulating various functional traits of its leaves and forming optimum functional combinations of the traits. (3) The contributions of different environmental factors to leaf traits differed significantly. This pattern of variation in leaf traits responded to different environmental conditions. There were significant correlations between the leaf trait and the latitude (P<0.05).The leaf length, leaf width, leaf area, specific leaf area, leaf dry matter content and leaf nitrogen content of A. mongolicus exhibited a latitude distribution pattern. The combined effect of changing precipitation and temperature conditions along latitude and strong local effects could contribute to the formation of these patterns. The meteorological factors have the greatest influence on leaf traits of A. mongolicus. The order from big to small is the average annual precipitation, the average annual temperature and the annual sunshine duration.
