Wind-blown Sand Prevention System at Gobi Desert Area along Xining-Golmud Section of Qinghai-Tibet Railway

Abstract  

In order to prevent the wind-blown sand damage on subgrade engineering in Xining-Golmud section of Qinghai-Tibet Railway in the plateau gobi environment with strong sunshine, severe freezing and thawing and powerful wind, we took PE (polythene) sand-fixation nets and high vertical wind resistance fences as plane measure and vertical measure respectively to make up a new gobi wind-blown sand prevention system. Field observation and indoor wind tunnel experiment proved its wind-blown sand preventing effect and reliability. Engineering application indicated that the new wind-blown sand prevention system possessed advantages of wind erosion resistance, reusability, long-life and environment protection, and at the same time it reduced daily maintenance workload. So the wind-blown sand prevention system could effectively prevent the gobi wind-blown sand damage on the railway, and could eventually replace the traditional sand-fixing measures of stone checkerboards, bamboo fence and etc. Under the similar circumstance with characteristics of much gobi wind-blown sand, high altitude, fragile ecological environment and scarcity of traditional wind-blown sand prevention materials, the new prevention system might be much suitable.
