Measurements of Coastal Dune Movement in Feicuidao of Changli, Hebei Province

Abstract  

By use of high-precision RTK GPS technology and survey method, we surveyed 9 times in three years from 2006 to 2008 the movements of typical coastal dunes including a coastal barchan dune and a coastal transverse ridge in Feicuidao region of Changli "Golden Coast"in Hebei Province, which is one of the most typical coastal aeolian distribution regions in China. The surveying data, which is about the direction and type as well as velocity of coastal dune movement, explained that the movements of coastal dunes in Feicuidao region represented the characteristics of slow advancing to inland with the way of to-and-fro. There are some differences among the movements of different coastal dunes and different sites of one coastal dune. For coastal transverse ridge, its bottom was stable in the field observation period, but the position of its crest advanced to sea within the direction of east in summer and autumn, and moved to inland within the direction of west in winter and spring, in general its crest moved to inland within the direction of west with the way of to-and-fro. But the coastal barchan dune advanced to inland with the way of to-and-fro of whole dune, and the velocity of its movement was faster. The reasons resulting in the movement above mainly relate with wind conditions of the studied area, the height and volume of costal dunes and the human activities.
