The Wind Character at Boundary Layer during A Thunderstorm in Tazhong, Xinjiang, China

Abstract  

The wind character at boundary layer during a thunderstorm on July 12, 2010 in Tazhong was given by using the wind profiler radar. Wind speed below the 3 000 m altitude increased significantly during the thunderstorm, and wind speed above 3 200 m altitude decreased during the precipitation period. There was a low level jet over the Tazhong in the altitude range of 900 m to 1 400 m during thunderstorms and the average wind speed was 17.1 m.s-1. A strong downdraft existed during the thunderstorm and the vertical velocity was approximately 3.0 m\5s-1. During the precipitation the downdraft strengthened, the water droplets average sinking speed was 5.1 m.s-1.
