The Effect of Different Root Partition Patterns on Soil Water Condition of Wheat-Corn Intercropping System

Abstract  A field experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of different root partition patterns (wheat corn intercropping that root separated by plastic film (PW/C), wheat corn intercropping that root separated by nylon (NW/C), Non-root-separation (W/C)) on soil water and water use efficiency (WUE) of wheat and maize under intercropping system. The results indicate intercropping systems significantly optimized soil water distribution in wheat and maize belt in two crops growing stage, and root partition patterns significantly reduced soil water dynamic and yield. Compared to the weighted average of sole wheat and maize, W/C, NW/C and PW/C treatments significantly improved yield by 33.60%, 26.93% and 24.69%, water consumption by -0.2%,1.02% and 6.69%, water use efficiency(WUE) by 34.93%, 26.67% and 17.80%, respectively. Compared to NW/C and PW/C treatments, W/C treatments significantly improved yield by 5~25% and 7.14%, decreased water consumption by 1.21% and 6.64%, improved WUE by 6.52% and 14.54%, respectively.
