Abstract:

Gurbantunggut Desert is the largest fixed and semi-fixed desert in China, and it is also one of the deserts in China most obviously affected by westerly circulation. A lot of progress on aeolian geomorphology researches have been made in Gurbantunggut Deserts since 1950s. This paper briefly summarized history in aeolian geomorphology research of the desert, and reviewed several progress in aeolian geomorphology on the desert, such as wind conditions and sand drift potential characteristics, distribution pattern of main dune types, material sources of the desert sand, granularity characteristics of dune sands, desert environment evolution, the longitudinal dune development pattern and modern dune dynamics, etc, and points out the problems existing in the research and looking forward to the future research direction.

Key words: Gurbantunggut Desert, drift potential, desert sands, longitudinal dune, evolution model of the desert, research progress
