Spatio-temporal Correlation of Sand-dust Weather with Wind Force and Precipitation in the Source Area of Blown Sand Threatening Beijing and Tianjin

Abstract  Analysis of meteorological data during 2000—2007 collected from 12 weather stations in the blown-sand source area threatening Beijing and Tianjin shows that the spatio-temporal distribution of sand-dust weather is determined by the combination of gale and precipitation in space and time to a great degree. The gale-precipitation combination significantly influenced the spatial sand-dust weather distribution (R2=0.960) and the monthly sand-dust weather variation (R2=0.995). The influence on the annual sand-dust weather variation was still outstanding (R2=0.864) though the effect was partly canceled by the management engineering through improving vegetation coverage in the sand source region. The significant correlations of sand-dust weather with gale days and precipitation imply that the correlation functions from multi-factor regression can be applied to forecast sand-dust days in the source area of blown-sand threatening Beijing and Tianjin.
