The Fluctuation Characteristics of Natural Populus euphratica Community under Water-overflowing Disturbance

Abstract  The main purpose of this study is to examine the fluctuation characteristics of natural Populus euphratica community in desert riparian forest under artificial surface water overflowing disturbance in the lower reaches of the Tarim River, China. The survey was conducted at fixed sampling plots. Investigated contents include the community structure, species diversity, and dominant species. The main results are as follows. ①Species composition in Comm. P. euphratica changed significantly. The species numbers and the floristics of the community increased under the disturbance. The community structure transformed from simple to complex, and the vertical stratification tended to increase. ②Both the species richness and species diversity increased obviously, while species evenness decreased under the disturbance. ③The number and variety of dominant species increased. Seen from these it was obvious that surface water overflowing is an effective measure in the process of vegetation restoration, which not only make species composition and community structure transform from simple to complex significantly, but also let the floristics (e.g. species richness), species diversity and dominant species increase. As a whole the fluctuation of Comm. P. euphratica is positive.
