Systematic Analysis of Water Resources Utilization and Economic Development in Shiyang River Basin |

Abstract Using social-economical data of Shiyang river basin in Gansu province, the authors analyzed the development and utilization of water resources by methods of correlation analysis and path analysis. It was disclosed that agriculture exerts more and more pressure on water resources along with the increase of population. More population resulted in more farmland and then more water resources consumption. Therefore, it is urgent to establish a scientific and rational water resources use mechanism, making the correlations harmonious among the water use in the upper, the middle and the lower river reaches, and among the water demands in departments of living, industry, agriculture and ecology. Consequently, the water use efficiency could be improved greatly in the whole basin. In order to alleviate the population-induced pressure on water resources but keep sustainable development of society and economy, the priority must be given to the development of the Third Industry, then to the Second Industry and then to the animal husbandry and the forestry; lastly, to realize the coordinated development among society, economy and ecology in the whole basin.
