Community Characteristics and Population Structure of Populus Euphratica Oliv in Lower Reaches of Tarim River |

Abstract The community characteristics and the population structure of Populus euphratica Oliv along 6 sections in lower reaches of Tarim River, including No.31-Regiment, Kuzilaike, Yinsu, Kaerdayi, Alakan, Yikanbujima, were studied with the method of quadrats investigation. The results showed that: (1) The species composition of P. euphratica communities was simple and there were 12 species belonging to 12 genera of 10 families. The arbor, shrub and herbage types was 1, 4 and 7, respectively. The number of P. euphratica species in the six sections were 9, 8, 4, 5, 4 and 2, respectively and the common species in the six sections were Populus euphratica and Tamarix ralnosissima. (2) The species diversity indices of P. euphratica communities were lower in the lower reaches and the Simpson index and Shanon-wiener index presented downward trend from No.31-Regiment to Yikanbujima section. (3) The average density of the P. euphratica populations was 606 ind·hm-2 and the average basal area was 20.01 m2·hm-2. The diameter at breast height of most P. euphratica populations was 7.5 to 32.5 cm, while that of under 7.5 cm and over 32.5 cm were few, so the species showed a spindle-shape structure in the lower reaches of Tarim River. (4) The water delivery has promoted the renewing of Populus euphratica populations, with the growing up of the shoots as the main form.
