Distribution of Fine Roots of Salix psammophila and its Relationship with Soil Moisture in Mu Us Sandland |

Abstract The distribution of fine roots of individual Salix psammophila and the S. psammophila forest in MU US sandland was investigated by using root drilling method and the fine root was defined as root with diameter less than 2 mm. The soil moisture was measured in the meantime. The results show that the main distribution of fine roots of S. psammophila is not beyond 1.5 m deep in the soil, and the fine root biomass reduces gradually with the increasing of the soil depth. The maximum of the fine root biomass appears in the surface layer of the soil, mainly in 0—20 cm, which takes about half of the total root biomass. The S. psammophila has developed horizontal roots, mainly distributed within the scope of about three times of that of canopy radius, so that it can get water in the shallow soil by horizontal expansion of roots. The roots biomass of the shrub on the top of the sand dune is less than that in the inter-dune. The biomass and the distribution of fine roots are determined by the quantity and distribution of water in soil.
