Effects of Sand Burial and Water Supply Conditions on Seedling Emergence of Populus euphratica Oliv. |

Abstract This paper explored the effects of sand burial and water supply conditions on seedling emergence of Populus euphratica Oliv. Four treatments of artificially sand burial at depths of 0 cm, 0.2 cm, 0.3 cm, 0.5 cm and five treatments of watering quota at gradients of 4.4 mm, 8.8 mm, 17.7 mm, 22.1 mm and 26.5 mm were designed. The effects of sand burial depth and water supply and their interaction on emergence rate were very significant (P<0.01). Under consistent water supply, the optimal sand burial depth was 0~0.3 cm, and the emergence rate was zero at the sand burial depth of 0.5 cm. At sand burial depths of 0 cm and 0.3 cm, the seedling emergence rates under two water supply treatments of 17.6 mm for every day and 22.1 mm for every two days were notably higher than those under other treatments; while at 0.2 cm sand burial depth, the seedling emergence rate under water supplies of 8.8 mm for every day and 26.5 mm for every two days were also more than those under other water quota (P<0.05). The feasible condition for seedling emergence of P. euphratica were sand burial depth of 0.3 cm and water supply amount of 17.6 mm for every day or 22.1 mm for every two days.
