Abstract The data obtained from “The Oasis System Energy and Water Cycle Field Experiment” in Jinta Oasis (JTEX) in summer of 2005 were used to analyze the characteristics of the diurnal variation of surface radiation over different underlying surfaces in Jinta oasis in clear day and cloudy day. The results showed that the characteristics of radiation over oasis were different from those over desert and gobi due to different hydro-thermal features of surfaces. On same synoptic condition, the downward radiation over different underlying surfaces was almost same; the upward radiation was the smallest and the net radiation was the biggest over oasis. The characteristics of radiation were different with different synoptic conditions; the radiation value in clear day was bigger than that in cloudy day over same underlying surface.
