| Dynamics of Landscape Pattern of Water Areas in Horqin Sandy Land, China
—A case study in Naiman Banner of Inner Mongolia |

Abstract Analysis on dynamics of landscape metrics of water areas at different spatial scales in Horqin Sandy Land showed that landscape pattern of water areas changed in a same trend in recent 30 years, though dynamic process had disparity in time series and spatial extents. At a large scale of 8 135.15 km2, number and areas of lake and wetland patches increased from year 1975 to 1985, however, their Class Areas (CA), Patch Number (NP) and Landscape Shape Index (LSI) decreased from 1985 to 2005; at a medium scale of 892.74 km2, the areas of lake and wetland patches decreased with fluctuation, and the turning period of wetland patches number decreasing and shape simplification was short and delayed compared with lake's. Due to frequent disturbance of people, livestock and impact from upper reaches, lake and wetland patches couldnt maintain in the whole time series at a small scale of 110.42 km2. Beach patchs NP and LSI were relatively stable in the recent 30 years at the 3 spatial scales, although CA had diverse process, and patch shapes became less regular at larger scale. Climatic fluctuation and human impacts drove this process.
