Abstract In the paper, the vertical changes of water chemical characteristics in Heihe River can be divided into the following regions based on analysis on samples of precipitation, surface water and groundwater. For surface water, they are Alpine ice-snow zone (>3 900 m), Alpine meadow zone (3 400~3 900 m), mountain forest and shrub zone (2 600~3 400 m), mountain grassland zone (1 900~2 600 m) and desert grassland zone (1 500~1 900 m). For groundwater, they are mountain fissure and piedmont gravel-bicarbonate zone, piedmont diluvial, alluvial and lacustrine plain-sulfate zone and desert salt-accumulating depression-chloride zone.
