Abstract: Land desertification, caused by destruction of ecological balance is an important ecological envir-inmental issue in the world today. It is also a territorial management problem that needs to be rehabilitated urgently. Based on the UNEP's assessment and China's actual situation the author regarded the land desertification as a processes of land productivity reduction and environment degradation occurred in the fragile zones due to undue human economic activities and resource utilization ine type is sandy land desertifisation(desertification formed on sandy land surface due to intensive landuse in a dry and windy climatic comdition. Another type is formed on the earthy deposit or weathering crust as a result of intensive landuse and water erosion. Land desertification is a main manifestation of environment degradation in the fragile ecological zomes and the development of desertification in turn accentuates the dislocation of ecolgical balance. The basic countermeasure to overcome envionment degradation and resource crisis in the fragile ecological zones is to establish a economic systerm of rdsource-saving type, moderate-development type and environment-protection type to achieve a better ecological, economic and social benefits.
