Magnetic Properties of Dustfall in Urumqi and Its Environmental Significance

Abstract  This study discussed on the magnetic characteristics of dustfall in the process of urbanization by environmental magnetic analysis in Urumqi in 2012, and comparing with the data of 2006. The results show that the grain sizes of Urumqi dustfall samples are mainly coarse particles of PSD and MD, and contain a small amount of anti-ferromagnetic minerals such as hematite. The grain sizes are coarser in 2012 than that of 2006 during the heating period. Air quality in Urumqi in 2012 non-heating period declined compared to 2006, which indicates winter pollution control has been successful in Urumqi. The main factors affecting urban air quality in Urumqi has been transferred from coal burning to urbanization and industry.
