Abstract: To investigate the effect of drought stress on the physiological characteristics of wild Iris lacteal var. chinensis, ten varieties of wild Iris lacteal var. chinensis from Gansu Province were selected under pot culture experiments. The drought tolerance of these varieties were evaluated after using clustering analysis. Regression analysis was used to assess the relationship between drought tolerance of these varieties and local precipitation of their original habitats. These finds can provide insight into wild Iris lacteal var. chinensis breeding and cultivation. The relative water content of ten varieties leaves decreased as drought stress increased. The permeability of cell membranes, malondialdehyde content, proline content, soluble sugar content, soluble protein content, superoxide dismutase activity, peroxidase activity, catalase activity, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) content, superoxide radical (O2) generation rate, hydroxyl radical (OH·) content of ten varieties leaves increased as drought stress increased. The wild Iris lacteal var. chinensis from Suzhou district,Ganzhou district,Yuzhong county, Huanxian county and Liangzhou district belong to high drought tolerance varieties, and the wild Iris lacteal var. chinensis from Minle county, Tianzhu county and Lingxia county belong to medium drought tolerance varieties and from Weiyuan county and Lingtai county belong to low drought tolerance cultivar. A negative significant correlation (P<0.05) was found between drought tolerance of these varieties and local precipitation of their original habitats.
