Desertification Land Survey in Source Region of Yangtze River and Analysis of Its Distribution Characteristics

Abstract  This study based on the technology of remote sensing (RS) and geographic information system (GIS)surveyed the desertification land in source region of Yangtze River with the purpose of quantifying its distribution status. The result shows that the total area of desertification land is 28 982 km2, accounting for 20.43% of the source region area of Yangtze River. In detail, the area of extremely severe desertification land, severe desertification land, moderate desertification land and light desertification land are 4 241.12 km2, 3 996.75 km2, 12 716.66 km2 and 8 027.16 km2 respectively. In addition, it was found that the land with slope gradient between 0°~2° is the main land type in source region of Yangtze River, where is distributed with most of the desertification land of the study region.
