Abstract  Based on wind data in a scenic spot of the Singing Sand Mountain & Crescent Moon Spring, the spatial patterns of sand-laden wind, drift potential and dominant sand-transporting orientation were investigated. Together with the spatial pattern characteristics of sand mountains, buildings and trees around the Crescent Moon Spring, the reason of sand encroaching to the Crescent Moon Spring was revealed. North wind was relatively scarce in the Crescent Moon Spring because of blocking of sand mountains to the south and north of the Crescent Moon Spring, and the dominant winds were from west and south. Sand mountains to the south of the Crescent Moon Spring moved toward north obviously. The results are useful to reveal the characteristics of sand damage to the Crescent Moon Spring and to provide theoretic base for controlling sand damage to the Crescent Moon Spring.
