Effect of Photoperiod on Growth and Spore Generation of an Emericella quadriclineata Strain

Abstract  The influence of photoperiod on the growth and spore generation of a strain of Emericella quadriclineata isolated from a cadaver of the mulberry looper, Apocheima cinerarius, was explored. Its hyphal growth was facilitated in liquid culture under long light, yielding significantly greater biomass than that under short light or in dark. The biomass peaked after 4-day incubation at the regime of Light:Dark 18∶6, an optimal photoperiod favoring spore generation on medium plates. At different temperature, sporulation capacity of the strain cultured under full light was much greater than that in full dark, peaked on day 7th at 25℃ under full light with a maximal increase rate being achieved on day 3rd to 5th. At 30℃ or 35℃, whether light or dark, the sporulation was quite poor. The effect of ultraviolet light on the growth of the strain increased with the decrease of exposure time.
