Effect of Soil Moisture on Vegetation Invading into Transition Zone between Windward Slope of Active Dune and Interdune Lowland

Abstract  

During plant natural regeneration process in semi-arid sand area, seed germination and seedling emergence are critical stages for maintaining plant population and realizing plant natural regeneration. Soil moisture and soil seed bank are always thought to be the primary restraining factors in the critical stages. A binary correlation analysis between seedling density and soil seed bank density as well as soil moisture at transition zone between active dune and interdune lowland indicated that the correlation between seedling density and soil moisture was significantly positive in the plant growing season (P<0.05), and the seedling density increased logarithmically with the increasing of soil moisture, but the correlation between seedling density and soil seed bank density was not significant (P>0.05). The results revealed that soil moisture was a main restraining factor in seedling emergence and vegetation establishment at the transition zone between active dune and interdune lowland, while soil seed bank was not; plant natural regeneration depended more on those seeds from plant communities in neighbouring sand dunes.
