Abstract The Wuchuan county of Inner Mongolia, situated in the ecotone between agriculture and pasture in North China, was taken as the study example. We have calculated the value of its ecosystem service, which mainly composes of conserving soil water, keeping water, regulating climate and maintaining nutriment circling, etc. The gross value of the ecosystem service is 61.796 billion Yuan(RMB), which is 151 times of the GDP of this county in 2000. Among the ecosystem service value the grassland has contributed much to. Based on the research above we try to provide some theoretical support for strategic issues such as ecological construction and agricultural structure adjustment for this area.
