Abstract: The concept of desertification has been a question open to arguments since its introduction to China. Various published areas of China's desertified lands present troubles to policy-makers. In my view, we have got a clear picture of the total area including wind-eroded deserts and desertified lands. However, different understanding of the concept of desertification leads to different category of desertified lands. The most important argument is what is the primary cause of desertification, natural or human factor? Disputes can be avoided by discussion. The author thinks the contemporary desertification dates back to the 17th century when the climate was cold and dry, and dust storms were frequent.
