Near-surface Aeolian Sand Paths and Intensity around the Crescent Moon Spring, Dunhuang, China

Abstract  By use of the synchronous wind data and sand transport data in the scenic spots of Crescent Moon Spring, the local circulation, and the intensity of wind-blown sand and aeolian sand paths were investigated. In addition, the dynamical change of mega-dunes and their effects on the Crescent Moon Spring was exposed based on the remote sensing images in 1985 and 2009. Due to the unique location, the pyramidal dune to the north of the Crescent Moon Spring moves towards the Crescent Moon Spring obviously. A raised sand ridge was formed on the mid-parts of the pyramidal dune because of the reduced wind from the east. According to the flow field of wind-blown sand, to open the channel of the easterly wind and restore the equilibrium circulation patterns is the key to prevent the Crescent Moon Spring from sand buries.
