Abstract: The method of gradually increase the zone of interaction, the optimum competitive scopes, which influence objective tree of Haloxylon ammodendron, was studied. Then the intraspecific competition intensity of natural H.ammodendron in the southern margin of Junggar Basin was quantificationally analyzed using the competition index (CI) model for individual tree introduced by Hegyi. The results revealed the optimum competitive scope of objective tree was 6 m within H.ammodendron population; The intraspecific competitive intensity was different in the different area. The intraspecific competitive intensity in different regions ranked in order of fixed dune,semi-fixed dune, migratory dune; The competition intensity decreased with increase of basal diameter (D) and the competition intensity changed significantly, especially it decreased sharply in the basal diameter ranges of 1-10 cm,and the inflection point occurred at basal diameter range of 5-10 cm,but the competition intensity had no significant variation when basal diameter larger than 10 cm. The equation was suitable for describing the relationship between competition intensity and basal diameter of H.ammodendron population in the southern margin of Junggar Basin.
