Abstract: We selected six shrubs, including Zygophyllum xanthoxylon, Oxytropis aciphylla, Ammopipta nthus mongolicus, Reaumuria soongorica, Ceratoides lateens, Nitraria tangutorum and three herbaceous plants, including Peganum multisectum, Pegamum nigrllastrum, Cleistogenes songorica from the desert of the Alxa Plateau in north-central China and meanwhile, we also observed their phenological stages from May to October 2011, in order to explore seasonal variations of leaf element content in plant with different growth forms. The results showed that: (1) the specific leaf area of different growth forms in different seasons emerged different variations, but all in medium level.(2) The plant nutrients display different variation in the growing season. The four constant elements(K, Ca, Na, Mg)was greater volatility in the growing seasons, yet four trace elements (Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu) had a little variation. And the majority of plants' elements( Zn and Cu) maintain low level in the growing seasons. (3) Cu and SLA showed a strong negative correlation, the others were without significance correlation. (4) Factorial analysis of variation for each parameter, with sampling date (season) and species as independent variables, showed that leaf K, Na, Ca, Mg, Mn, Cu, Zn contents were mainly determined by plant species. For leaf Fe contents, it was the interaction of sampling date (season) and species.
