Abstract: Surface texture characteristic of quartz grains from linear dunes and barchan dunes in northern Qarhan Salt Lake of Qaidam Basin was compared and analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results show that the quartz grains from linear dunes and barchan dunes in northern Qarhan Salt Lake of Qaidam Basin are mainly sub-angular shape, and massively developed dish-shaped impact scars, crescent-shaped impact scars, which suggests typical features of aeolian environment. The sediments in northern Qarhan Salt Lake are dominated by physical decomposition and mechanical action while the chemical weathering plays a small role, which reflects the arid and hot sedimentary environment at that time. The existence of conchoidal breakages, parallel striations and V-shaped pits indicate that the sediments in the Qaidam Basin have been subjected to glaciation or flowing water. It can be inferred that the erosion products from the mountains around the Qaidam Basin or sediments from Qarhan Salt Lake may be one of the sources of dune sediments in northern Qarhan Salt Lake.
