Spatial Heterogeneity of Soil Chemical Properties in the South Gurbantonggut Desert

Abstract  Using semivariogram analysis and the Kriging method, the paper studied the spatial variability characteristics of topsoil pH and conductivity, organic matter and total nitrogen in 0~30 cm shallow layer of two typical longitudinal dunes and thier interdunes in the south Gurbantonggut Desert. The results indicated that the top soil pH values, organic matter and total nitrogen contents accord with a normal distribution, the others accord with a lognormal distribution. Semivariogram analysis shows that topsoil pH and conductivity are best described by spherical model, and topsoil organic matter and total nitrogen contents well accord with the Gaussian model. Expect for total nitrogen content which is moderately spatial-correlative, the other soil parameters are strongly spatial-correlative. The Kriging method was applied to estimate the unmeasured points and then the isoline maps were obtained. In this way, the spatial variability of soil parameters could intuitively be reflected.
