Community and Population Characteristics of Populus euphratica in upper Reaches of Tarim River |

Abstract By the quadrat survey method we studied the characteristics of the communities and the structure of population of Populus euphratica Oliv in upper reaches of Tarim River in the Alaer, Xinqiman and Yinbazha sections of upper reaches of Tarim River and analyzed the growth of P. euphratica through measurement of branches diameter increment. The results showed: (1) The species structure of P. euphratica in upper reaches of Tarim River was simple and there were 16 species belonging to 16 genera of 10 families. The species number of the arbor, shrub and herbage was 1, 6 and 9, respectively. The number of plant species in the three different sections was 6, 8 and 12, respectively, and the common species in the three sections were Populus euphratica.Oliv, Tamarix ralnosissima and Halimodendron halodendron. (2) The diversity index of P. euphratica community in the three sections was little and the abundance index, Simpson index and Shannon-winner index decreased in order of Yinbazha, Xinqiman and Alaer sections. (3) P. euphratica population in upper reaches of Tarim River was based on young individuals and the tree height and DBH structure showed it was a growth-oriented population. (4) The branch diameter increment of P.euphratica in different sections fluctuated greatly from 1998 to 2002, and it declined from 2003 to 2007.
