Abstract: City is the main carrier of social development and modern economy, and urbanization is the inevitable trend of human social development. At present, a violent urbanization tide is sweeping the west of China under the guidance of national strategy to develop western regions. But there should be special routes in urbanization due to its fragile ecological environment. The regional physical geography condition is the decisive factor for producing the ecological environmental problem in western China, but strong human activity and pressure to the regional ecological environment are the main reason of causing and aggravating the ecological environmental problem. So, the key to ecological environmental improvement of the west is to lighten the human activity pressure to the ecological environment. Under the social economic condition of the west, non-agriculture then urbanization is the effective measure to realize social economic transition, thus lighten the ecological environment pressure and to promote the ecological environmental improvement.
