Abstract: Hulunbuir Steppe is one of the high quality natural pastures and important livestock husbandry bases in China. But in recent years, sandy desertification occurs in the large areas of sandy grasslands in Hulunbuir Steppe. According to the achievements of on-the-spot investigation, remote sensing and previous researches, the present situation and evolution trend of sandy desertification have been discussed in this paper. The cause of sandy desertification is also approached through analyses on geological environment changes and human activities. Finally, it is considered in this paper that sandy desertification of Hulunbuir Steppe results from the outcome of natural changes and human activities; and geological environment is the basis of sandy desertification development; while the surface soil and vegetation are sound protective umbrella of steppe; however the direct cause of sandy desertification is human s great damage to steppe. Finally, authors offer three proposals for sandy desertification control.
