Abstract: Land surface temperature (LST) is an important parameter for surface energy balance, physical processes in regional and global scale. In order to discriminate the characteristics and attributions of LST in "Wet Island of Tianshan Mountain", Ili River Basin area by the methods of variation trend and spatial statistics, the spatio-temporal distribution rules of LST in different land use types are discussed during recent 14 years (2001-2014). The results demonstrate that:(1) MODIS LST product is applicable for the analysis of spatio-temporal distribution characteristics of LST in Ili River Valley (mean R2=0.90); (2)The distribution of LST had different spatial patterns obviously in Ili River Valley, The average LST from 2001 to 2014 changed obviously, and the sudden ascent happened in 2013, 2006, 2008 and 2013; LST values in the center of river area are higher than the marginal areas, the percentage of high temperature area and low temperature area accounted for 41% and 23% respectively; Furthermore, the seasonal variation of LST shows a unimodel pattern, and its peak value occurs in July; (3)The spatial distribution of annual average LST differ according to land cover types:the highest annual average LST is distributed in the construction lands, in the second place is grass land and dry land, then minimum annual average LST is distributed in the glacier and snow cover; (4)The LST trend was classified as severely reduced, basically unchanged and slight increase, and their corresponding percentage of area are 5%, 37% and 26% respectively; belong to basically unchanged and slight increase areas of LST trend are dominant. The spatio-temporal variation of LST not only is influenced by the global climate change, but also is affected by temperature field of different land use/cover change in different district and zone. Vegetation cover and its distribution are contributing to the spatio-temporal distribution of regional LST.
