Abstract: Fujian is one of the provinces with large sandy land, and is a typical representative of the coastal sandy land in southern China. In order to regularly and accurately understand the current situations and dynamic changes, the sandification were monitored and surveyed in five periods (1994, 1999, 2004, 2009 and 2014) in Fujian Province.Based on the investigated data, historical documents and remote sensing images, this study analyzed the dynamic characteristics and driving factors of coastal sandy land in Fujian from 1949 to 2014. The results indicated that the area of the sandy land in Fujian presented a decreasing trend during the past 65 years. The total amount of coastal sandy area remained relatively stable with the frequent conversions between different land types in 1949-1989.But from 1989 to 2014, the total amount of coastal sand was decreasing rapidly, and lots of forested sand (mound) and sandy farmland were transformed to non-sandy land including mainly residents, industrial and mining land and farmland.Coastal erosion and shoreline retreat would be important natural driver of reduce coastal sandy land.National and local policies of afforestation and wasteland cultivation were considered as the main reasons for the desertification land change in 1949-1989, while the changes in recent 25 years were mainly attributed to the quickly developments, construction and other human activities over coastal sandy land.
