Abstract:

Pink salt lake is often called rose lake, and there are few studies on the causes of the lake colour changes over time. In this study, the causes of seasonal changes in the colour of Dagetu Salt Lake, a rose lake in the Badain Jaran Desert, were analysed through field observations and indoor experimental methods such as X-ray diffraction and high-throughput sequencing. The results show that Dagetu is a chloride type salt lake with high salinity and alkalinity. In summer, the high water temperature and nutrient-rich water caused the proliferation of haloalkaliphilic and coloured microorganisms, causing the lake to turn pink. In autumn, as the water temperature decreases and the amount of water decreases or disappears, the water becomes colourless and transparent. At this point a large number of sodium chloride crystals mixed with hematite precipitate out, forming a pink salt layer on the bottom of the lake, making the lake look pale pink. Changes in microbial populations from season to season result in different dissolved oxygen in the water and consequent redox reactions in the hematite, resulting in changes in the hematite content of the crystalline salt from season to season.
