| Strategic Consideration on Desert and Desertification Sciences Development in China |

Abstract In the past fifty years, the desert and desertification science system of China has been established, which has filled in gaps of the research field. Moreover, the development of this subject has been promoted by its innovative and systematic theory advances and the remarkably practical achievements on aspects of economic, social and environmental benefits, simultaneously has made prominent contribution to the social and economic development and the eco\|environmental protection in northern part of China. A series of scientific results, including \!National Science and Technology Progress Top Grade Award\" etc., have been achieved, which have produced more than 150 hundred million direct economic benefit. By now, a number of national desert and desertification research institutes which are predominated by some relational institutes involved in the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the State Forestry Administration of China have been founded, where many outstanding desert and desertification scientists assemble. A relatively integrated desert and desertification sciences system and the scientific research system of China have been set up, which have obtained significant progress on aspects of sand blown physics, desert environment, forming and evolution, global climatic change, desertification process and its control, desert region resource environment and sustainable development, desertification remote sensing and information systems, etc. The net of long\|term field experimental station has been set up in the main desert and desertification areas of China, which provided large numbers of scientific research achievements and theoretic gist for national decision\|making on desert development and utilization, and desertification prevention and control. These are widely recognized by China authority, provincial people, science circle and whole society. Based on reviewing and summing\|up the former desert and desertification researches and controlling practices, the author makes further considering and discussing on main problems faced by desert and desertification sciences of China.
