Seed Germination and Seedling Population Dynamic of Two Annual Plants during Sand Land Restoration Process

Abstract  Setaria viridis and Corispermum marocarpum are two familiar annual plants in Horqin Sand Land, and the two plant species play a very important role in sand land restoration process. In this study, seed germination and seedling population dynamic of the two plant species were studied by fixed natural quadrats method. The results showed that the germination number of the two plants in different stage of sand land restoration changed with season and site, and the seed germination and seedling survival were strongly dependent on precipitation, and the germination number of two plants in present year increased with sand land fixation. The monthly germination ratios of the two plants decreased from April to August, but most of S. viridis seed germinated during May to June. The two plants germinated in patches. There was some hysteresis for the response of S. viridis germination to precipitation compared to C.marocarpum. The suitable temperature for S. viridis germination was higher than for C. marocarpum. There were C-pattern survival curves for S. viridis and C.marocarpum seedling, and this implied that their life strategy belongs to r-strategy.
